Two or More Atoms Can Be Held Together Through Shared

Deoxyribonucleic acid is a very complicated molecule and essential for all known life.

What is a molecule? [edit | edit source]

A molecule is the smallest thing that a substance can be divided up into, while remaining the same substance. It is made upwardly of 2 or more than atoms held together by chemical bonding. These atoms can be the same kind, or different kinds. This is slightly different to a compound, where it has to be two or more atoms of different elements. This does hateful that all compounds are molecules, merely not all molecules are compounds.

Where do nosotros detect molecules? [edit | edit source]

Almost everything is made up of molecules, including the air yous breathe, the nutrient y'all eat, and even the water you drink! In the air, oxygen atoms normally travel with a partner (two ten O = Oii), as does hydrogen (2 x H = H2) and nitrogen (Nii). Water (H2O) is made of 2 hydrogen atoms (H2) and one oxygen atom (O). Even regular tabular array table salt that you eat is a combination of molecules! Would it surprise yous to know that the molecules in table salt are made up of dangerous atoms? Y'all may consume common salt every day, simply it is made up of an explosive atom (sodium) and a toxic 1 (chlorine)! The reason salt is safe to consume is that molecules are very unlike from the atoms that make them upward.

How do the atoms bring together together? [edit | edit source]

Atoms come together to form molecules considering of their electrons. Electrons can join (or bond) atoms together in 2 master means. When two atoms share electrons between them, they are locked together (bonded) past that sharing. These are called covalent bonds. Bonds similar this are in oxygen gas, nitrogen gas, and hydrogen gas. Simply when an atom gives one of its electrons to another atom, they are held together by electric forces. These sorts of bonds are called ionic, because in one case an atom loses or gains an electron, it becomes something called an ion, which has a positive or negative charge. These sorts of bonds are in acids, similar vinegar, and bases, like ammonia. Salt is also held together past ionic bonds. The sodium, usually explosive, loses an electron to the chlorine, which is besides dangerous in its natural country, simply when this reaction happens, both become harmless and even tasty!
