Gaia came to save the day !

While taking a new way from Colorado to Utah I went through a dead zone where my navigating app dropped completely with no signal to accurately follow my pre planned route so I resorted to my compass and map and proceeded to follow what information technology looked to exist the appropriate way on the map and take in mind all of these while a Thunderstorm is raging in the background. Importing back country camping zones

I employ the Gaia iPhone app nigh exclusively to plan my adventures, and I rely on it constantly while hiking to stay oriented and on plan. It gives me the peace of mind to tackle trips I would otherwise not feel comfortable attempting. For planning I apply the app literally hours each day: route creating, adjusting, recreating; adding waypoints for important, interesting things to note while hiking; relying on the included interactive trail lines and the various map layers to design authentic, safe trips. It is by far the most of import tool in my hiking toolbox. Even though I've gotten quite good at using the app, I'm continually finding new and amazing things it can do. For example, I'm planning a backpacking trip to Denali where backcountry camping ground is regulated by zones and quotas. The National Park Service has a wonderful paper map that shows these zones. I found that their website allowed me to download a data file of the zones and to my delight I discovered the Gaia app hands imported them along with included metadata. What an astonishing planning feature. I have many other examples of how I use the app but will save them for time to come reviews. Don't think twice: buy the pro version and use information technology, use it, utilize it.

Information technology's pretty practiced, simply has its quirks

I've used this app for navigation and data collection on a few projects every bit a field biologist. It's got a lot of good points, only besides could employ some improvements. The skilful: overall it's intuitive to utilise , especially the information collection. I love how easy it is to organize data in folders (except that you can't remove a subfolder once you've put it in one). The graphics choices are very good. Importing and exporting files is as well easy. Information technology does impale my battery, only I expected that. My biggest complaint is that the measuring distance tool is really annoying and not very good. You accept go to into a menu "create a route." Sometimes information technology works and sometimes it doesn't. Also, the app gets dislocated if yous just want to measure out between 2 points and will actually try to route you onto a road. In my opinion, one of the most of import features of a navigation device is measuring distance! Why not just put the ruler as a tab by itself and that could be used to measure arbitrary points. Too, some of the base maps are one-time. Actually one-time. 1 map I was using was at least vii years old. And this is for the subscription version. Some of my coworkers wished that they'd stayed with the free version and felt that the paid upgrade wasn't worth it. One time my subscription run out, I may attempt information technology with the complimentary version to run across if I similar it.
